They're Dancing in the Aisles

Years from now, political historians looking back on this campaign will bestow the only possible name: The Year of the Macarena.

On the final campaign flight aboard Air Force One early Tuesday, President Bill Clinton and his staffers danced the macarena, the Latin line dance that Democrats have adopted as their war dance. Asked to evaluate the performance, a White House spokesman said Clinton had done the macarena "in a presidential manner." ***** In Vino Veritas? Only in California: On Tuesday, the ad marquee at Malibu's oceanfront Pier View Cafe & Cantina read: "Don't drink and vote." ***** The Grinch Arrives Early Election Day usually brings out the idealism in the sould of the American voter. But not this year. Some sample sentiments: * Clinton voter Juanita Davis of Philadelphia: "Nobody's perfect. Nobody's growing wings and halos." * Dole voter John Malayter of Atlantic City, N.J.: "They're both windbags, but Dole's the lesser of two evils." * Perot voter Cheryl Marks of Rutherford Heights, Pa.: "I don't think he'll make it, but hey - it's better than voting for the other two." * Unspecified voter Rose Graham of Raleigh, N.C.: "Voting time for me is probably one of the most aggravating times - not because I don't want to vote, but because I get so sick of all the crap that goes on before." ***** . . . But He's OUR Rogue Speaking of idealism . . . Rep. Joe McDade, a Republican from Pennsylvania, was under indictment for bribery anbd (and) racketeering when he won re-election in '94. Now that he has been acquitted, his support seems even stronger. After all, McDade is famous for bringing home the pork. As voter Frank Bucari said after voting for McDade tuesday: "At least he's good for the area. That's the game they're playing. Let's get our share." ***** The Face Looks Vaguely Familiar When Republican Bob Dole voted Tuesday in Russell, Kan. …
