Ferguson Rushes Parkway South Past Francis Howell 20-3 despite Stirring Win, Patriots Miss out on Playoffs When Parkway North Wins

Parkway South fullback Ray Ferguson had a lot to play for Friday night, not the least of which was the fact that he is a graduating senior.

On senior night, Ferguson gained 126 yards on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns, leading the South Patriots to a 20-3 victory over previously unbeaten Francis Howell.

"We wanted to win this game and if we go on to the playoffs that's a bonus," Ferguson said. South's victory celebration after the Missouri Class 5A District 9 game was tempered by news that Parkway North defeated Francis Howell North 14-0, thus gaining the district playoff berth. For South to advance, Parkway North's victory over Howell North could only be by 13 points or less. Even so, "it's a satisfying ending to the season," Parkway South coach Dave Yarborough said. He called the victory over Howell North (9-1) "something we can build on for next season." Parkway South (7-2) led at halftime 13-0, due in part to the Patriots' strong running game. But six Howell turnovers also hurt the Vikings. Parkway South scored on the first possession of the game, marching 72 yards on 11 plays, capped by an 18-yard touchdown run by Ferguson with 7 minutes 47 seconds to go in the first quarter. Scott Williams' extra-point kick made it 7-0. The drive was highlighted by a 17-yard run by Chris Ross on third and 1. That left South with a first down at the Howell 30. Four plays later, Ferguson took a deep pitch left, cut back inside of his blockers and scored. "It was all the blocking by my offensive line," Ferguson said of his 77 yards rushing in the first half. Howell responded with an impressive drive that began at its 35-yard line. But the Knights' threat was dashed by a fumble by Damon Williams that was recovered by Wright, playing safety on defense. A shanked punt by Parkway South left Howell in excellent field position at its own 45 early in the second quarter. …
