Meramec Player Recovering From Crash Injuries

A member of the Meramec Community College basketball team remained hospitalized Tuesday in Mount Vernon, Ill., from injuries suffered when a team van overturned Sunday night.

Chris Keane, 19, from Parkway South High School, was reported in good condition at Crossroads Community Hospital with lung and spinal injuries. The accident occurred at 8:30 p.m. on Interstate 57, about nine miles north of Mount Vernon. The van apparently went off the road in a construction area and overturned when driver Raymond Lynch, 43, of St. Louis, tried to pull it back on the road, said Jefferson County sheriff's deputy Bryan Ferguson. Lynch volunteers his time to help the Meramec team, said Meramec athletic director Bob Bottger. Also injured were team members Mike Branson (Lafayette High), and Mitch Fusco (Hancock High). They treated and released. The team was returning in two vans from a jamboree-scrimmage at Vincennes University in Vincennes, Ind. BOXING Warrant Issued For Morrison's Foe A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Anthony Cooks, who is scheduled to fight Tommy Morrison, the HIV-infected heavyweight. Police in Okmulgee, Okla., issued the warrant Tuesday for Cooks on a complaint he raped a 15-year-old girl Oct. 19. KOTV in Tulsa reported that another arrest warrant had been issued Monday after Cooks failed to appear last week for a jury trial on a charge of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana. Okmulgee police said he was not in custody Tuesday night. Officers in Tulsa and Oklahoma City were helping look for him BASKETBALL Basketball Most Popular Team Sport Basketball is the most popular team sport for Americans to play, although participation in the United States fell slightly in 1995 after seven years of growth, according to a survey. Only bowling and freshwater fishing had more participants in 1995, according to an annual survey by American Sports Data, which tracks sports participation in the U.S. The Dallas Mavericks waived veteran forward/center Terry Davis, after signing free agents Chris Gatling and Oliver Miller during the offseason. The Mavericks also waived guard Jimmy King and rookie free agent swingman Herb Jones. The New Jersey Nets waived rookie free agents Donta Bright and William Cunningham. Bright, a forward, was a member of new Nets coach John Calipari's Final Four team while both were at the University of Massachusetts last season. Cunningham is a center out of Temple. Former Loyola player Carl Golston was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to armed robbery. Golston, 33, and three others held up a liquor store April 20 and tied up four victims but fled without $600 in loot, police said. The robbers returned to try to retrieve the money but again fled empty-handed because one of the victims had freed himself, locked the store and written down the license number of Golston's vehicle, police said. …
