Lafayette Lancers on Crusade against Top-Ranked Teams

The past few days have been pretty hectic for coach Tim Walters and the Lafayette High Lancers.

In the midst of a solid season, the Lancers surprised two of the area's better teams, winning 2-0 over then-No. 1 CBC Friday and over fourth-ranked Francis Howell North Monday.

"The last four days have been pretty interesting," said Walters, who's in his second season as varsity coach at Lafayette. "We're not as skilled as teams like CBC or Howell North, but we caught some breaks and we played some great soccer." Ironically, Walters was as proud or prouder of his team's 6-1 victory over Eureka on Saturday than he was of the upsets Friday and Monday. "In a situation like that, you're preparing yourself for the letdown. It's only natural," the coach said. "But to their credit, our guys came out and really played well Saturday. Eureka beat us 3-0 to open the season, but this time we scored five goals in the first 30 minutes." Lafayette (16-3-2) is ranked ninth in the latest Post-Dispatch large-schools poll. "I'm happy for the kids because I know how hard they've worked," Walters said. "We're not a team that's going to knock the ball around or play a pretty game of soccer, but we're going to work hard and we're going to make you work to beat us. "The key is hard work. Honestly, if we're not working hard, CBC and Howell North can blow us off the field." The Lancers, who were 11-11 last season, have been getting exceptional play from senior goalkeeper Brian Cross. "He was sensational against us," Howell North coach Vince Nowak said. "And his defense did what it had to do in front of him. Lafayette played us real tight and didn't give us any room. And when (the Lancers) won the ball, they quickly started the counterattack." The backfield of Gavin Smith, Bernard Feldman, Brian Downey and Casey Harper has been solid all season. …
