Doghouse Should Be Waterproof and Insulated during Wintertime

Dear Dr. Fox: I've just been married, and because of my husband's allergies, I have to keep my dog outdoors this winter. Can you tell me what will make my dog's life bearable in a doghouse?

Your dog's house should be waterproof, draft-proof and well-insulated. Put an old warm rug or a deep blanket of straw on the floor. Since he may protest going in and think of it as a punishment, offer him a few of his favorite treats to coax him in. Once he's gone inside his doghouse, as added bonus, reward him with a beef knucklebone.

Provide him with plenty of food during the winter, because he'll need to eat more when he's living outdoors. And start putting him out now when it's not that cold, letting him back inside the house once in a while. It will make it easier for him to adjust to doghouse living, and it will help ward off illness. Dear Dr. Fox: I have two cats in good health, ages 9 and 4.
