Crime Is a Concern, but Folks Still Love St. Louis

Money magazine says St. Louis is unsafe. Fortune magazine says it's a great place to live.

Which one is right? Some people who live in the area say they think that both may be true.

"I don't think one of them has to be wrong," said Lillye Ranson of University City. "Crime is a problem and that worries me. But there are a lot of good things about the town." Victor Zarrilli is a lawyer who lives in south St. Louis and works downtown. "I was shocked," he said of Money's crime ranking. "It makes no sense. I work downtown and I don't see crime there. I realize there are some areas where it may not be safe, but on the whole I think the city is probably as safe as the county." Money magazine rates St. Louis as the third most dangerous city in its latest issue. Last month Fortune magazine ranked the metropolitan area as the sixth-best area to live. Fortune's report puts emphasis on quality-of-life issues in addition to crime, and it measured surrounding suburban communities in addition to the city. …
