The father hesitated at the last moment, telling his 22-year-old son: "You are a good soldier. Make sure I die."

That's just what the young man did. On Wednesday, Shannon McCreery pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the stabbing death of his father, John, 54, in a suicide pact that began and ended with the father's death in a Springfield motel on May 12. Prosecutors said John McCreery was such a domineering force that it was impossible for Shannon to refuse when his father asked for help plunging a knife into his abdomen. That blow wasn't fatal. With his father in great pain, Shannon stabbed him twice in the throat. "With the control that his father had over him, things built up. And then when his father asked him to kill him, he was not able to, as most people would, walk away," said Sangamon County State's Attorney Patrick Kelley. …
