Shanahan Trade Brings Him Back to Blues' Division

As if Blues general manager Mike Keenan needed any more reminders of the most controversial trade of his tenure. . . .

The long-awaited trade of former Blues winger Brendan Shanahan to the Detroit Red Wings finally went through Wednesday. The Hartford Whalers traded Shanahan and defenseman Brian Glynn for Keith Primeau, Paul Coffey and a No. 1 draft pick.

So instead of seeing Shanahan twice a season in relatively meaningless games against the moribund Whalers, the Blues will see him at least five t imes in Central Division slugfests with the rival Red Wings. Keenan traded Shanahan to the Whalers for defenseman Chris Pronger on July 27, 1995. He inquired about reacquiring him last month. "There'll certainly be more exposure," Keenan said, "because we'll play him more, (but) we've faced him before." Shanahan had a goal and two assists and was minus-3 in two games against the Blues last season, both losses for the Whalers. He received a hero's welcome when the Whalers played the Blues on March 9 at Kiel Center. …
