Stream Team Detects Creek Sewage Leak

Members of a stream monitoring team at Francis Howell North High School alerted St. Peters officials on Thursday to sewage leaking into Spencer Creek in Spencer Creek Park.

Sally Scott, a teacher who was with the group of about 12 students, said members noticed a strong sewer odor about 9 a.m. while monitoring the stream, which had been clear when they were there earlier this week. The leak was discovered behind the tennis courts by the Sutters Mill Road Bridge.

Some of the students asked a passing jogger to notify city officials, Scott said. Park rangers who arrived called the sewer department, which sent a crew to repair the problem. A spokesman for the city said the crew found rags clogging the pipeline and causing sewage to overflow from a manhole cover into the creek. "That is why we are here," said Larry Ruff, the team sponsor who teaches environmental studies and earth science. "It happened to be part of the curriculum of our class. …
