Day of Rain Delays Start of Series

Article excerpt

The rain, rain wouldn't go away, so the American League Championship Series has to play another day. The first game of the ALCS between the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium was postponed on Tuesday and rescheduled for 3:07 p.m. (St. Louis time) today. Game 2 was moved to 2 p.m. (St. Louis time) on Thursday, which was previously a travel day.

No one was surprised by the announcement, as it rained all day in New York.

"We were anticipating this would be the case," Yankees manager Joe T orre said. "You want to play, you're excited to get going, but I'm sure (Baltimore manager Davey Johnson) feels the same way. You have no control over the weather." Playoff rainouts are not, historically, a good omen for Torre. The last rainout in a league championship series game was Oct. 8, 1982. The Atlanta Braves led the Cardinals 1-0 at Busch Stadium when the game was called. Torre was the Braves manager at the time and the Cardinals went on to win the series. The last ALCS rainout was Oct. 2, 1971, at Baltimore. The Orioles won that series, but lost to Pittsburgh in the World Series. The weather factor has altered Torre's pitching plans. Originally, Torre had Andy Pettitte, David Cone and Jimmy Key penciled in as his starters, with Pettitte possibly starting three times if necessary. Now, that won't happen, perhaps for the better. Rogers was 2-0 with a 3.25 earned-run average against the Orioles this season. For all their offensive prowess, which includes a record 257 home runs, the Orioles were not as effective against lefthanders, off of whom they hit only 83 of their home runs. And the Yankees staff allowed the fewest home runs in the American League. "We can't trade punches with them," Torre said. …
