Sprained Knee Idles Panthers Defenseman

Florida Panthers defenseman Ed Jovanovski underwent tests Thursday on his sprained right knee and could be sidelined several weeks. Test results will be disclosed today.

The injury occurred during Wednesday's 4-0 loss at Edmonton when the Oilers' Luke Richardson stuck out a knee that dropped Jovanovski to the ice. Richardson received a five-minute major for kneeing. Another casualty was Florida's Dave Lowry, who missed most of the game. He had the wind knocked out of him when he was leveled by Edmonton's Bryan Marchment. The Panthers didn't retaliate in either instance. "Maybe it's time we need to bulk up a little bit," right winger Scott Mellanby said. San Jose's Tony Granato will play on a line with Brett Hull and Anaheim's Paul Kariya in the All-Star Game. Granato replaces injured Joe Sakic. Bowman's remarks followed his team's 5-5 tie with Chicago on Jan. 5, which was officiated by referee Terry Gregson. Bowman's fine is the league maximum for coaches. "Some (referees) have a better rapport with the Russians," Bowman said. "Gregson has none at all. He just buries them." Philadelphia defenseman Kjell Samuelsson will be out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to repair a ruptured disc in his back. The Flyers' team physician says he expects Samuelsson, 38, to recover fully. …
