The Missouri State High School Activities Association's executive director, Becky Oakes, met Thursday with Cardinal Ritter High basketball coach Preston Thomas to discuss six student-athletes who have transferred to Ritter.i

Neither side would comment about the meeting. But George Blase, assistant executive director of the MSHSAA, stopped short of saying the meeting was part of an investigation.

Sources close to the matter say that officials from the Hazelwood School District have made inquiries about the transfers of five student-athletes, including 6-foot-4 forward Brandon Campbell, who played last season at Hazelwood Central and doesn't become eligible at Ritter until next season. The sixth transfer is from Lutheran North. The issue, sources say, is whether Campbell was contacted by the Ritter staff to transfer to the school to play basketball. Also, there are questions regarding whether he meets residence requirements as they pertain to transfer rules set by the MSHSAA. Ritter, a private institution supported by the Archdiocese of St. Louis, has an enrollment of 250 students. The school is coming off successive Missouri Class 2A basketball championships. Last year two of its players, Chris Carrawell and Loren Woods, signed with Atlantic Coast Conference universities. Carrawell plays for Duke, Woods for Wake Forest. Soldan High used to be one of the area's formidable basketball programs. From 1972 to 1990, Soldan, coached by Marvin Neals, won 327 games, nine district championships and one state championship. When Soldan ceased to exist as a regular public high school after the 1990-91 school year, the school's rich athletic tradition seemed to fade into oblivion. But Soldan is trying to rebuild its heritage with a new school - Soldan International magnet - and a new basketball team. …
