4 Aldermen Are Seeking Re-Election on April 1 Pagano, Mclain Unopposed; Woelfel, Bateman in Contests

Article excerpt

Four incumbent aldermen in St. Peters will be on the ballot in the April 1 municipal election, and two are unopposed. The deadline for filing was Tuesday.

Running unopposed are:

Alderman Len Pagano, Ward 3, seeking his eighth two-year term. Pagano, 52, also ran unopposed in 1995. Lew McLain, 65, is seeking his third term in Ward 4. In 1995, McLain defeated Patrick Barclay by 204 votes. Two other incumbents, Betty Woelfel, Ward 1, and Judy Bateman, Ward 2, could face spirited campaigns. "Truly, I expected that there would be more (than one opponent)," Woelfel said. Her opponent, Dan O'Brien, says he is not the mayor's candidate in this race. "Tom Brown did not come down and ask me to run," O'Brien said. "He found out that I was exasperated, and he came down and talked to me. But Tom Brown did not talk me into running." O'Brien says he became exasperated last spring when he learned that Woelfel and others on the board endorsed the challenger for mayor. That the challenger had the same name, including the same middle initial, as the incumbent mayor added to his irritation. "I guess I would have been less upset had he had some experience and, coincidentally, the same name," O'Brien said. "But unless I missed it, (the challenger) hadn't served on any committees or anything else in St. Peters." Woelfel "has every right to endorse whoever she wants, but not as my alderman," O'Brien said. At an aldermanic meeting before last April's election, O'Brien blasted W oelfel and then-Ward 1 Alderman Mike Snider. Snider lost in the election to Joyce Townsend, whom the mayor supported. …
