And the Winner Isn't. Why Does the Academy Always Overlook the Truly Good Performances?

Tuesday, the nominees for the 1997 Academy Awards will be announced by the president of the National Academy of Quality Filmmaking, Oscar Madison. The so-called "Oscars" are widely regarded as a measure of a film's artistic success, and winners of the Oscar often go on to win more prestigious awards, such as the Emmy, the Grammy, the Tony, the Slammie, the Hugo, the Point, and the Freddy.

Having seen several films in 1996, I feel qualified to suggest the following nominees in the main categories.

Best Actor: Sylvester Stallone goes after his third Oscar with his many-shaded performance as the compassionate opthalmologist in "Daylight." But look for him to get a run for his money from Steve Guttenberg ("Zeus and Roxanne"), Michael Jordan ("Space Jam"), Hamlet ("Hamlet") and Academy favorite Tom Arnold ("Big Bully," "Carpool"). Best Actress: Academy voters are notoriously sentimental, and Pamela Lee ("Barb Wire") may take the coveted statuette as a backhanded reward for her performance as kindly Aunt Heidi in the long-running TV series "Baywatch." Other contenders include Demi Moore ("Striptease"), Christine Taylor ("A Very Brady Sequel"), Vanessa Williams ("Eraser") and Albert Brooks' mother. Best Supporting Actor: The betting favorite right now is The People, co-star of the autobiographical boxing flick "The People vs. Larry Flynt." But we wouldn't be surprised to see the nod go to the equally pugnacious Bob Barker ("Happy Gilmore"), Robert Goulet ("Mr. Wrong"), Whizzer ("101 Dalmatians") or Butt-Head ("Beavis and Butt-Head Do America"). …
