The large piles of dirt in Forest Park along Lindell Boulevard are among the early signs of the park's eight-year, $86 million renovation plan, city officials said Friday.

John Hoal, the city's urban design director, said at a briefing for private donors that the mounds were excavated in the first phase of the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District's widespread sewer upgrading in the park. Over the next few months, much of the dirt will be used in the regrading and expansion of two parking lots between The Muny and the History Museum. Officials said the enlargement - to about 650 spaces from 500 - will be partly complete by the upcoming Muny season. Paving and landscaping will follow after the season.
