Detour Revision on Research Park Overpass Offered

The Missouri Department of Transportation is offering a revised plan for an overpass from the Missouri Research Park to the North Outer Road along Highway 40-61, near Highway 94.

The plan establishes a new road with a stoplight linking the overpass to Highway 94. Wolfrum Road, near the overpass, would be closed or limited to through-traffic.

The Research Park changed its first plan after Weldon Spring strongly opposed the overpass. A resolution signed in November by the Weldon Spring Board of Aldermen said the overpass would adversely affect side streets near Beckman Road and allow unwanted traffic along Wolfrum Road. Beckman Road would have linked the overpass with Highway 94. The new road linking the overpass with Highway 94 would lie just west of Beckman Road. In the resolution, board members asked the Research Park and the highway department to adopt alternative plans that bypass the city's residential areas. The Research Park sought to ease travel on Highway 94 for employees who live in St. Charles County. The highway department has final say on the overpass because it crosses a state highway. Jim Gremaud, area engineer for the highway department, said: "The new plan is compatible with our proposed upgrades to Highway 40-61, but if i t's incompatible with Weldon Spring, then we'll have to look at the whole picture again." Gremaud said the department was waiting to hear from all parties affected by the overpass before signing off on the project. Alderman Andy Clutter, 1st Ward, said the Weldon Spring board is still waiting for the Research Park and the highway department to reveal the revised plan. Clutter said state Sen. Ted House, D-St. Charles, was supposed to arrange a meeting with the Weldon Spring board, the highway department and the Research Park to solve conflicts. House, who opposed the overpass, led a town meeting in early January to gather public opinion about the project. …
