Bosley Rejects Harmon's Charge That He's to Blame for Ralston

Former Police Chief Clarence Harmon on Thursday night said that Mayor Freeman Bosley Jr. is responsible for the possible departure of Ralston Purina Co. from St. Louis. Bosley responded that Ralston's departure was "still mere speculation and conjecture."

Harmon, Bosley and lawyer Bill Haas appeared before about 400 people at a forum for Democratic mayoral candidates at Bishop DuBourg High School, 5850 Eichelberger Street.

The audience at the forum, sponsored by five neighborhood and business associations, was overwhelmingly in favor of Harmon. He received a standing ovation when he entered the auditorium. In his first chance to speak, Harmon called attention to a statement by Ralston that it was considering taking its downtown headquarters and 2,000 employees out of St. Louis. "We cannot allow this to continue," Harmon said. He charged that Bosley's administration was responsible for "scandal after scandal of its own making. Nobody is minding the store." Harmon promised that if he wins the Democratic mayoral primary on March 4, he will go before a meeting of the Ralston board of directors on March 16 and offer proposals on how to keep the firm in St. Louis. Bosley replied that he was aware that Ralston "has concerns, and we hope we can address them." He said the first step would be to "find out what it is they need." He said being mayor was "not about holding up a newspaper and talking about problems. It's about getting results." Then he listed accomplishments such as crime reduction, more police on the street and new housing construction. Bosley was asked why there was no new convention hotel near the Trans World Dome and no additional gambling casino at Laclede's Landing and why nothing had been done with the site of the closed Arena.
