Elway On Mend After Shoulder Surgery

John Elway, 36, is expected to be ready for the Denver Broncos training camp after having arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder for the second time in four years.

After Monday's procedure, Elway should be ready for training camp on July 18. He likely will miss the team's minicamp and throwing camp in May. In his 14 NFL seasons, Elway has played 205 games and missed only 10 because of injury. FOOTBALL Cowboys Re-sign Johnston The Dallas Cowboys have re-signed fullback Daryl Johnston to a five-year, $7.575 million contract, fulfilling the team's top offseason priority. Johnston, 31, is considered one of the best blocking backs in the NFL. * The Green Bay Packers have re-signed veteran receiver Don Beebe, who spent most of 1996 as the team's third receiver but started six games when Robert Brooks and Antonio Freeman were injured. That leaves Kentucky with eight scholarship players because of injuries and departures. * Rob Evans will remain the University of Mississippi's coach, bypassing an offer to become LSU's coach. Evans, 50, just completed his fifth and most successful season at Ole Miss. Without any seniors, the Rebels went 20-9 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for only the second time in school history. * Sherman Dillard, a former assistant coach at Maryland under Lefty Driesell, has been hired to succeed Driesell as the coach at James Madison, Dillard's alma mater.
