Scarsone, Seven Others Get the Ax from Redbirds

The ax fell on eight players in the Cardinals' camp Friday, including reserve infielder Steve Scarsone, who seemed a lock when he came to camp even though he was not on the 40-man roster.

Scarsone hit five homers for San Francisco last season despite hitting just .219. He hit only .143 in 21 at-bats with 10 strikeouts this spring.

Scarsone said he was a slow starter but this spring was beyond even his expectations. By cutting him Friday, the Cardinals gave Scarsone a week to get another job. "This is better than being the last player cut," he said. Scarsone, who hit .252, .272 and .266 in his three previous seasons with the Giants, said he was a little surprised he was cut. "You're always surprised when you get bad news," he said. Roberto Mejia, who flopped in previous trials with Colorado, had two more hits Friday, keying a seven-run third inning as the Cardinals beat the Phillies, 10-0. Scarsone, 30, was given the option of going to Louisville, as was veteran utilityman Cory Snyder, who was also trimmed Friday. …
