Stanley Stotler, 38, of Shallow Lake Drive in O'Fallon, returned home from work on Jan. 14 to find a man in his bedroom closet. He told a St. Charles County judge on Wednesday that he tried to defend himself with a handgun and was shot once in the shoulder and once in the head.

Jonathon H. Irons, 16, of Wentzville, is accused of breaking into Stotler's house and shooting him.

During a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, Associate Circuit Judge Terry Cundiff decided Irons should stand trial in that shooting. But Cundiff said the prosecution failed to show probable cause that Irons broke into another house in December and stole a handgun. The state must present additional evidence if it wishes to proceed on that charge. Cundiff delayed a decision on whether Irons should go to trial on charges of threatening a schoolmate with a gun and shooting a customer at a gas station. St. Charles County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Ella Boone told Cundiff that Irons stole a gun in December from a house in an incorporated area of the county. Two weeks later, Boone said, Irons fired shots at a Mobil gas station in O'Fallon, hitting a customer in the back of the leg. On the same day that Irons broke into Stotler's house, Boone said, he threatened to kill on e of his schoolmates by pointing a handgun in her face. …
