G.L. "Larry" Halenkamp, a longtime advertising and civic leader in St. Louis, died Tuesday (March 11, 1997) at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur after a long illness. He was 74 and lived in Frontenac.

Mr. Halenkamp began his career in advertising in Minneapolis. He moved to St. Louis in 1958 and became president of St. Louis Outdoor Advertising. He held that post through the 1980s, when the company merged with Combined Communications and later Gannett Corp. He retired in 1984 as president of Gannett Outdoor Advertising of St. Louis.

For many years, he served on the board of directors of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America and was a past president of the St. Louis Advertising Club, which honored him three times with its highest award.

Mr. Halenkamp was born in Cincinnati. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1948, where he was a captain of the football team and a star football player. He also attended Northwestern University and played football there. …
