Competition in Local Phone Service Is Still on Hold

Competition in the local telephone service market is coming more slowly than expected, Manning Lee, a lawyer for Teleport Communications Group, told potential customers in St. Louis recently. Companies other than regulated telephone carriers serve fewer than 1 percent of telephone customers, and many of the competing companies simply are reselling the regulated company's service, Lee said at a seminar at TCG's office in Creve Coeur.

Lee said the companies won't face "real competition" until carriers w ith their own facilities are offering service widely. The regulated companies also need to meet the conditions the government has set for them to enter the long-distance market. The conditions include providing connections and repair service to competitors on the same basis as their own customers.

He termed Ameritech's request to offer long-distance service in Michigan premature because so few customers have the option of buying service from another carrier. …
