Brooks Offered Job on Falcons Staff

Former Rams coach Rich Brooks could pop up in the National Football Conference West again this fall. Brooks has been offered the defensive coordinator job for the Atlanta Falcons.

Fired Dec. 22 after logging a 13-19 record in two seasons in St. Louis, Brooks interviewed Monday in Atlanta. Defensive coordinator is the only opening remaining on the defensive staff of the Falcons' new coach, Dan Reeves.

"If this goes our way, I'll be excited," Reeves said. Reeves wants an answer from Brooks sometime today. Brooks certainly knows how to attack the Atlanta defense. In two games against the Falcons this past season, Brooks' Rams scored 93 points and piled up 944 yards in total offense. Brooks has been a head coach for the last 20 years. But before he became coach of the Oregon Ducks in 1997, he had worked as an assistant for 10 years on the defensive side of the ball at the college and pro levels. Brooks could not be reached for comment Tuesday. Another former Ram could haunt the team next season in the NFC West. At his introductory news conference as the new coach in New Orleans, Mike Ditka said he wants to hire Willie Shaw to coach the Saints defensive backs. Shaw, 53, was defensive coordinator the past two seasons for the Rams, seasons in which the Rams gave up the two highest single-season point totals in franchise history. Yet another former Ram, Johnny Roland, is expected to be named running backs coach of the Arizona Cardinals today. …
