The scramble for second place at last year's Missouri Class 4A Wrestling Championships turned into a pretty good tussle while Lee's Summit was making a mockery of the championship race.

Such scenarios have been common the past five years, during which time the state champions have provided little suspense, being decided by at least 28 points.

However, coaches of the top Class 4A teams expect something quite different at the championships, which run today through Saturday at Hearnes Center in Columbia. "If you ran a state tournament every weekend for the next month, you'd probably get four different champions," Oakville coach Rocky Streb said. "For the first time in a long time, no one can come in and blow everyone away. There hasn't been a close 4A title in a long time." Jefferson City enters as a slight favorite, having qualified 12 wrestlers in last weekend's sectionals. However, Francis Howell, Howell North, Oakville and Fox are expected to make a run. Howell, which has placed fifth, third and third the past three years, qualified eight, including three sectional champions and three runners-up. Howell coach Jud Hoffman predicted this season will begin a trend toward parity because more wrestlers are beginning at a younger age. "It's closer because more and more schools are having good little league programs," he said. "It really got popular with everybody within the last 10 years. I really feel that the strong programs will stay strong and the weaker will get strong because kids are starting at an earlier age." Oakville will send 10 wrestlers, including three sectional champions; Fox qualified eight and three champs; and Howell North will have eight and three champs. In the Class 3A tournament, St. Charles West will compete for its third successive state title, sending 13 wrestlers and six sectional champions. …
