Consider a braid - wrapped, tucked and pinned close to the head.

It's a classic style, and you don't need yards of thick, flowing hair to wear it. Constance Treiber, a secretary in corporate communications at Nooter Corp., tried one even with a layered cut. The hair around her face is too short to reach to the back of her head. Enter the style team at The Hair Co., 36 North Euclid Avenue in St. Louis. Stylist Margaret Darakjian says one of the tricks to getting even short hair slicked back and tied into place ponytail style is to wet the hair and apply style gel. From here on, what happens depends mainly on the length of your hair and the look you want to end up with. Darakjian braided Treiber's ponytail, then wrapped and pinned it into place off center, rather than at the nape of the neck. She ended up with a small knot of hair - partly because it was still wet but also because of Treiber's layered cut. …
