Oilers Put Money On McNair And Ship Chandler To Falcons

The Houston Oilers traded Chris Chandler to the Atlanta Falcons, paving the way for Steve McNair to take over as the Oilers' starting quarterback.

The Falcons sent the Oilers a pair of undisclosed 1997 draft picks for the 31-year-old Chandler. Chandler, who is under contract through the 1998 season, completed 409 of 676 passes for 4,559 yards, 33 touchdowns and 21 interceptions the past two seasons with the Oilers. He acted as a tutor for McNair, taken by the Oilers in the first round of the 1995 draft out of Division I-AA Alcorn State. FOOTBALL Packers' Williams Starts Serving Jail Term Green Bay Packers cornerback Tyrone Williams reported to jail to begin serving a six-month sentence for shooting at a car two college championships and a Super Bowl ring ago. Kentucky forward Ron Mercer, the leading scorer in the Southeastern Conference, is giving up his last two seasons of eligibility to enter the NBA draft. Kentucky coach Rick Pitino predicted Mercer will be one of the top four picks in the draft. Louisiana State dismissed center Bob Hall for the remainder of the season, coach Dale Brown announced. Hall's suspension is the ninth for LSU this season. A judge in Houston ordered San Antonio Spurs guard Vernon Maxwell to pay $592,000 to a woman who claimed the NBA player knowingly exposed her to genital herpes. …
