New Treasurer Votes to Confirm Himself Madison County Board Makes Interim Choice

For 14 years, Bill Aery's name put him first on the list when the clerk called the roll for votes by the 29 members of the Madison County Board.

On Wednesday, that alphabetical accident gave Aery the chance to cast the first vote to confirm himself as the interim county treasurer.

Aery, 65, a Republican from Godfrey, won the two-year appointment by Chairman Rudy Papa and was confirmed unanimously by the board to succeed John Shimkus, who took office Tuesday in Washington as the new Republican congressman for the 20th District. As Papa had required of applicants for the post, Aery said he would run for the job when it was up for election in 1998. "I'm thrilled to death," he said. He said he planned no changes in the office, which he said had been run well by Shimkus for six years. Aery said his experience during 35 years working for Pepsi Cola in Alton, where he retired as vice president of marketing in 1989, would help him in his new job. "I don't know of any difference in handling money here than at Pepsi, except there's more of it," he said. …
