Rams Pursue Lb Jones, Former Mu Running Back

The Rams apparently have decided that Michael Jones is their outside linebacker of the future, opening negotiations Monday with Jones' agent - Harold Lewis of St. Louis.

"It would be a dream come true to have Michael sign with the Rams," Lewis said. "He's excited about the idea of coming here."

Jones played running back at the University of Missouri, and he makes St. Louis his offseason home. Jones spent his first six seasons with the Raiders, in Los Angeles and then in Oakland, but he is an unrestricted free agent. He led the team in tackling in the '95 and '96 seasons. In St. Louis, he would replace Carlos Jenkins as one of the team's starting outside linebackers. Jones, Lewis Bush of San Diego and Wayne Simmons of Green Bay all made free-agent trips to St. Louis. But if the Rams and Lewis can't agree on contract terms, the team might broaden its search. "I think we'll get something done," Lewis said.
