Tri-City Speedway Gets Boost from Winston Series

Tri-City Speedway officially joined the NASCAR fold Tuesday with the announcement that the Granite City oval will be part of the Winston Racing Series.

"We had a sanction available this year, and the natural place for us to come was right here to Tri-City," said Dennis Huth, NASCAR vice president of administration. "This is a major market, with the Cardinals and the Rams. We see this as another piece to the puzzle that's coming into the area."

Huth said with the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series scheduled to visit the St. Louis area in July at Gateway International Raceway, NASCAR wanted a greater presence here overall. The Winston Racing Series is NASCAR's grass-roots program, aimed at giving local auto-racing talent a steppingstone to the big time. "There are 1,000 tracks in this country racing a weekly series, and we have 100 of them," Huth said. "We feel like we have the creme de la creme." Basically, the competition at Tri-City will not change. The weekly show will continue to feature several classes of cars, but only the modifieds will count in the Winston Racing Series points. There are 10 regions in this series, each with 10 tracks. A track champion is eligible for a regional championship, and a regional champion is eligible for the national championship. The points that a driver compiles in the weekly series of racing will determine track champion, regional champion and national champion. Winston puts up $1 million for the series, and another $300,000 is in the fund that is distributed at the end of the season. A regional champion can earn $35,000, and a national champion can earn in excess of $130,000. ***BEGIN THREE STAR TEXT*** "That's pretty strong for a weekly series," Huth said.
