Wings Cast Lure, Hook Blues into Many Penalties

Article excerpt

Scotty Bowman had no gripe with the head-butting, cutting and slashing the Blues did to his Detroit Red Wings.

"Not if they call the penalties," Bowman said.

Referee Dan Marouelli called them as he saw them. And what he saw was a Detroit team that took a licking to keep on ticking off the Blues. Maltby, wearing a visor to protect an old injury, was a fairly innocent bystander when head-butted by Geoff Courtnall. That cost Courtnall a five-minute major penalty and an ejection. The Wings blew both long power plays. Even so, Draper was in tune with Bowman's great mind in trading pain for a man advantage. "Absolutely," said Draper, a checker with his team's first goal in both victories. " `Malts' and I will do that anytime to get a power play." Detroit winger Brendan Shanahan, a former Blues hero turned villain, nominated his captain for a medal. …
