Application for Grants Ok'd for Child Care, Technology Programs

The University City School Board has approved applications for two grants to help pay for the district's programs on school-age child care and industrial-technology education.

The district will apply for $32,280 in block grants from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to finance before- and after-school-care programs and to buy playground equipment for the early-childhood-education center.

The district will ask for $20,000 to run YWCA latchkey programs at Delmar-Harvard, Flynn Park, Jackson Park, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Barbara C. Jordan schools. Each school will receive $4,000 to be used for transportation, professional development, program material, supplies and equipment. The district also would use $10,000 of the money to buy new playground equipment for the Julia E. Goldstein Early Childhood Education Center. The remaining $2,280 is requested by Flynn Park School for improvements in its early education program. In addition, the district will apply for a $10,000 grant from the state education department's Division of Vocational and Adult Education to support industrial-technology-curriculum development, professional development and equipment purchases. …
