Agency May Get Funds To Hire In-house Lawyer

The Missouri Highway Patrol won the backing of legislative budget negotiators to hire its own lawyer after key players said Attorney General Jay Nixon doesn't provide round-the-clock legal advice. Nixon's spokeswoman, Mary Still, said Wednesday that the attorney general has lawyers who "can be reached 24 hours a day." But she said Nixon would not oppose giving the patrol an in-house lawyer. "If they feel they need someone housed over there to handle day-to-day concerns, we would support whatever approach they want to take," Still said. "But we are available and have been called at odd hours." Still, during its second straight evening of budget talks Tuesday, a House-Senate conference committee on the proposed state budget embraced spending $43,000 to hire a patrol lawyer. AP LICENSE FEES House Votes To Authorize Hike At Patronage Offices Local patronage offices that offer drivers license renewals and other services would raise their fees by 75 cents under legislation that cleared the Missouri House. Sponsoring Rep. O.L. Shelton, D-St. Louis, said many small fee offices are struggling because transaction charges set by the state are too low. His bill (HB459) would increase the price for renewing or registering vehicles, transferring vehicle titles, replacing drivers licenses and other services. Fee offices provide those services for a slightly higher charge than state-run facilities. The 85-48 announced vote Wednesday sent the legislation to the Senate.
