Stallings Heads Home Following Hip Surgery

Former St. Louis Cardinals and University of Alabama football coach Gene Stallings returned Friday to his ranch in Paris, Texas, to recover from a broken hip. Stallings, 62, was injured Sunday when a colt knocked him to the ground while he was feeding horses.

"He will be in a wheelchair, walker, crutches, etc., for about three months, his doctor says," said hospital spokesman George Kimbrough. Stallings had four pins inserted into the hip. "I'll use the golf cart to get around," he said. "I've figured out a way I can fish out of the golf cart." He said he'll undergo physical therapy at the ranch. "Lord no, I'm not gonna hire a nurse," Stallings said. "I want to do everything myself. I can take care of myself, it will just be a while before I can take care of others."
