Goalie Bides Her Time, Lets Her Light Shine

Jessie Kuhlman knows about being patient.

A sophomore goalie on the Francis Howell North High soccer team, Jessie recently got a chance to start five games. The Lady Knights, ranked fourth in the latest girls soccer poll, went 4-1 in those games, with the only loss coming in a 4-2 setback against defending state champion Incarnate Word Academy.

"It was fun, getting a chance to play and to show the coaches what I could do," said Jessie, 16. "I was kind of nervous at first, but once I faced some shots in warmups, I settled down pretty quickly. I felt some pressure - the Duchesne and Incarnate Word games were pretty intense and I faced a lot of quality shots - but overall, I was happy with the way I played. I'm just glad I could help the team." With Jessie in goal, the Lady Knights held off Duchesne 2-1 in overtime to capture the GAC Tournament title to open the season. But Jessie is back on the bench now. She'll play regularly for the Howell North junior-varsity and will continue to dress for varsity matches, picking up experience along the way. "I enjoyed starting for the varsity, but I understand the situation," Jessie said. Jessie probably understands the goalkeeper situation at Howell North better than most. The team's starting goalie is her older sister, Kristy. A senior who earned third-team All-Gateway Athletic Conference honors a year ago, Kristy Kuhlman missed those early season games while competing in Europe with an Olympic Development Program squad. Teammate Erin Waller also made the trip to Europe. The development squad went 3-2-2 "against some great teams," Jessie said. "But now that she's back, she's the starter again. And that's fine with me. I know how hard she's worked for this; she's a senior and she deserves to be this team's starting goalie." Kristy, who is being recruited by several big-name colleges, including the service academies, will be Howell North's representative at the Post-Dispatch Scholar-Athlete Dinner later this spring. …
