St. Joseph's Parish Poised to Break Ground for New Catholic Church

When Leonard "Sonny" Becker was born in 1927, his family was among fewer than 200 families who attended St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kimmswick. His parents helped build the church, and he was one of the first to be baptized there. On May 1, Becker and his wife, Betty, will help break ground for a new St. Joseph's Church in nearby Imperial.

Seventy years after the original church was built, more than 1,200 families fill the church pews and aisles every weekend for Mass. Betty Becker, who joined the parish 44 years ago when she married Sonny Becker, is leading a campaign for the new church.

Parishioners planned to have the groundbreaking on Easter, but the ground was too muddy, so they postponed the event to 7 p.m. May 1, the Feast of St. Joseph. "I hope the Lord doesn't give us any more rain," Betty Becker said. "I talked to Him, but I don't know if He's listening." She said the new church was long overdue. "This area is growing by leaps and bounds," she said. …
