Jury Convicts `Mistaken Identity' Man

A jury in St. Louis County Circuit Court convicted John Webb late Monday of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the fatal shooting of Calvin McGee in October 1995 in Country Club Hills.

Jurors recommended a sentence of life in prison. Judge Maura McShane set sentencing for Aug. 4.

McGee, 25, was shot 11 times on Oct. 5, 1995, inside the doorway of his Country Club Hills home. Authorities alleged that McGee was mistaken for his brother, Alfredo McGee, 18, who was the intended victim in a feud between rival teen groups. Webb, 21, denied any involvement in the shooting. He testified Monday he was at an aunt's house when McGee was killed. Webb also denied he was part of a shoot-out in O'Fallon Park in the city a few days before the shooting. He said that he was riding with his girlfriend and eating at White Castle when the shooting happened and that he was unaware of any confrontation. Webb admitted he had been suspended from Jennings High School in April 1995 after a fight with Alfredo. …
