MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS: TWA may have edged up in national rankings of customer satisfaction, but a contingent of St. Louisans who trekked to Sioux City, Iowa, last weekend for the nupts of Max Schott and Jessica Toft (heiress of Landmarks Association director Carolyn Toft) were decidedly not amused by the hometown airline. First, an over-booking error stranded the locals at Lambert Field for hours. Then, the carry-on baggage of those unlucky enough to be gifting cutlery to the happy couple was confiscated by airport security, checked into the main baggage compartment - and lost (along with those unmentionable necessities not generally available at J.C. Penney's in Storm Lake, Iowa, near Sioux City). Still, the rain stopped long enough for the blushing bride to be kissed by the out-of-town crowd that included: Jack Carpenter, Mary Carr, Melanie and Tony Fathman, Barb Geisman, Merle Kling, Cindy Longwisch, Dorothy Martin, John Sappington, Mimi Stiritz, Dan and Philip Toft, and Beau Valance. They eventually arrived in time to swap airline food stories with Toft family members and friends who made infinitely easier trips from Norway and Brazil.

OLD SAW CUTS ANEW: Judge James Dowd is the jurist who runs the highly acclaimed "drug court" for the St. Louis circuit. His job is to discourage recidivism among first-time drug criminals by referring them to vigorous treatment programs, schools and vocational programs - instead of prison. A key element of drug court is a regular report to the judge - and that's where courthouse observers heard Dowd congratulate a young man and his brother for undergoing drug rehab. "The family that cleans up together," intoned Dowd, "doesn't shoot each other over a rock (of crack cocaine)."
