Station Casino St. Charles Lays Off 52

Station Casino St. Charles laid off 52 of its 1,600 employees Monday. The company said the terminations cut across all departments, covering salaried as well as hourly workers. Casino St. Charles has faced a strong threat since Harrah's and Players opened casinos at nearby Riverport in March.

"With the recent openings of new competitors, we have had to make difficult decisions regarding appropriate staffing levels," said Tony Raymon, general manager of Casino St. Charles. "Although we have sustained a leading share of business in the St. Louis market, some restructuring has been necessary." Steve Brewer, the casino's public relations manager, said all the dismissed employees got severance packages, which varied depending on their position and length of service. Some, including the former personnel director, may take jobs at Station Casino Kansas City, he said. In April, gambling revenue at Casino St. Charles was down 14 percent from April 1996.
