Police Vow Inquiry in Fatal Shooting

Article excerpt

St. Louis Police Chief Ron Henderson promised a thorough investigation into the fatal shooting of a man outside his home by a St. Louis police officer.

"The investigation is just beginning, and I urge anyone who has any information to call us," he said at a news conference Wednesday.

Robert Green, 36, was fatally shot outside his home in the 5900 of Wells Avenue shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Three detectives from the North Patrol Division said they had spotted a man walking briskly down the street with a pistol in one hand. The detectives said they got out of their car, identified themselves and yelled to the man to drop the gun.

Instead, the detectives said, the man pointed the pistol at them and one of the officers fired two shots at the man as he started to run. Green was shot in the left rear side and was pronounced dead a short time later.

A .22-caliber pistol was recovered near Green's body, police said. The weapon had three live rounds and one spent cartridge.

Police have found no witnesses to the shooting. …
