Airport-Area Mayors' Meeting Fizzles No Common Goals Reached on Economic Development, Bowers Reports

Bridgeton Mayor Conrad Bowers says a meeting of mayors of municipalities near Lambert Field and St. Louis and St. Louis County officials was unable to reach common goals on economic development.

The intent of the meeting, organized by the St. Louis County Municipal League, was to discuss the idea of forming a partnership among the city, county and municipalities on economic development near the airport.

Bowers told the Bridgeton City Council last week that the meeting had provided a lot of misinformation and that he had suggested that the mayors schedule their own meeting. "I thought it was important that we meet alone because we have a vested interest, but when we did, only three mayors attended," Bowers said. Tim Fischesser, executive director of the municipal league, said the purpose was to interest the city, county and municipalities near the airport in exploring ways to improve tax bases near the airport. "It could be those immediately touching the airport or those in the second and third tier," Fischesser said. …
