Home-Abortion Kit On Web Is Dangerous, FDA Says

Do-it-yourself kits promoted on the Internet for home abortions and female self-sterilizations can be lethal and should not be used, the Food and Drug Administration warns. The agency said these products posed "significant, possibly life-threatening risks," and the sterilization kit used drugs not adequately tested on humans for mutations and cancer. In addition, because the source of the drugs is unknown, their purity may be suspect, said Dr. Lisa Rarick, an obstetrician-gynecologist who heads the food and drug agency's division of reproductive and urologic drug products. The agency urged consumers not to buy such kits through the Internet or any other way, and noted that U.S. law barred the sale and promotion of unapproved medical products. The abortion kit pu uses a combination of drugs - methotrexate and misoprostol - not approved by the Food and Drug Administration to terminate pregnancy, and an agency study found that using the kit without a doctor's supervision could cause heavy vaginal bleeding or even death. NEW HEART PUMP Devices Help Patients Waiting For Transplants Patients undergoing the ordeal of their lives - the wait for a heart transplant - are getting some high-tech help: a new implantable pump that can save those with the most rapidly failing hearts. University of Washington physicians recently implanted one of the bagel-sized pumps into the abdominal cavity of a critically ill 52-year-old man awaiting a donor heart. Now he's walking hospital halls, eating better and, most important, getting oxygen-rich blood throughout his body. The pump - a "left ventricular assist device" - takes freshly oxygenated blood from the left ventricle (the heart's main pumping chamber) through a tube, then pumps it directly into the aorta, the main artery to the body. …
