JUST IN TIME for summer vacation comes a handy paperback, "Missouri Family Adventure Guide" by Jane Cosby (Globe Pequot Press, $10.95), a nuts-and-bolts guide to attractions and events.

The book is divided into five regions, with some great close-to-home escapes, day trips and long weekend possibilities. Not only is it fun to read about your hometown as presented to a tourist, but you're also bound to discover something you didn't know about Kirkwood or Crestwood or downtown St. Louis.

From historical sites like Felix Valle House in Ste. Genevieve to outdoor adventures like canoeing on the Jack's Fork River and events like the American Royal Horse Show and Rodeo, Cosby includes directions, price ranges, hours and enough description to guess which your family will enjoy. Annual festivals and celebrations are noted with general time of year. Cosby, who has lived in Missouri all her life and has traveled the state with her family, picks a Top Ten for the state and for each region. (We wouldn't agree with all of them, but that's what keeps the world interesting.) For the entire state, she chooses: St. Louis Zoo; St. Louis Science Center; Grant's Farm; Conservation Nature Centers in St. Louis, Blue Springs, Springfield and Jefferson City; Johnson Shut-Ins; Mark Twain National Forest; National Scenic Riverways; Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World; Katy Trail State Park; and the Kaleidoscope and Hallmark Visitor Center, Kansas City. As you can see, most are handy for St. Louisans. Sail Away If you'd like to sail away a bit farther from home, consider a three- to six-day cruise on a historic passenger schooner, a fishing schooner or racing yacht. They're all members of the Maine Windjammer Association, which has been offering cruises in Maine since the 1930s. They sail along the coast of Maine from Boothbay to Acadia National Park between Memorial Day and Columbus Day each year. …
