It's an Inside Job as Cubs Beat Pirates

Chicago's Sammy Sosa and Pittsburgh's Tony Womack hit inside-the-park homers five minutes apart in the sixth inning Monday, but the Pirates again struggled to score at home, losing 2-1 to the Cubs.

It was the first time two inside-the-park homers have been hit in the same NL game since Lou Brock and Hector Cruz of the Cardinals each did it at Busch Stadium against San Diego on June 18, 1976. Greg Gagne of the Twins had two for Minnesota on Oct. 4, 1986, against the White Sox.

Sosa doubled and scored the Cubs' first run in the fourth on Shawon Dunston's sacrifice fly before lifting a long fly ball to right center with one out in the sixth. Pirates rookie outfielders Adrian Brown and Jose Guillen collided while chasing down the ball, it dropped and Sosa circled the bases. In the bottom of the inning, Cubs center fielder Doug Glanville couldn't make a diving catch of Womack's sinking liner, allowing Womack to score standing up. Reds 8, Phillies 5: Bret Boone homered as Cincinnati put together its best offensive game in a month and beat visiting Philadelphia in the first game of a doubleheader. …
