Chances to Make Travel a Learning Experience

Article excerpt

WE ALL KNOW that travel is educational, but if learning to make change in German or hail a waiter in French isn't enough for you, consider this selection of scholarly trips available this summer and fall.

The University of California at Berkeley has been transforming travelers into temporary Oxford scholars for 28 years. The three-week sessions (June 30 to July 19 and July 21 to Aug. 10 this year) offer choices of 22 intensive seminars taught at Oxford's 700-year-old Worcester College. Choices include: "Four British Prime Ministers," "The Great Cathedrals and Abbeys of England" and "The English Romantics: Dreams, Visions and Imagination." Each seminar is limited to 12 students and is taught by an English don.

Mornings are devoted to seminars and afternoons are free for independent study (including access to the university's many libraries). The $3,400 fee includes tuition for one three-week session, a single room, all meals, lectures and receptions. Call (415) 252-5229. If covering a little more territory sounds interesting, consider Berkeley's Travel With Scholars program, offering nine separate tours led by expert instructors who fill you in on the culture and history of the region you will be visiting. Included this year are art in Paris, architect ural sites in Turkey, art and culture of Venice, modern art in the South of France, Sicily, the American Southwest, New Orleans history and culture and London's theater scene. For a brochure, call (888) 209-7344, ext. 76. Paint In Italy Are you a budding Michelangelo? Pack up your paint and travel to Italy, where you're sure to be inspired by the charming scenery and art-filled history. Diana Willis offers four two-week sessions with instruction in landscapes, portraiture, still life, florals, perspective and more. Participants work in oils, pastels, water colors, acrylic and pen and ink. Special classes in gilding and faux finishes are also offered. The $3,250 fee includes air fare, land transfers, a lake-view room, food and art lessons. Call (212) 486-1462. Footsteps Of Impressionists Travel in the footsteps of the Impressionists on a tour that follows the lives and work of the movement's best-known painters from Paris and north to Normandy. Visit the Musee d'Orsay and Musee Marmottan in Paris and have lunch in Auberge Ravoux where Van Gogh lived. Visit Monet's Giverney, Rouen and the countryside painted by Monet and others. Led by retired professor Maurice Jones, a native Parisian now living in San Francisco, the tour promises a leisurely pace, a small group and no long days of bus travel. The trip, Sept. 4-20, costs $3,898 and includes air fare, hotels, meals and museum entrances fees. Contact Calparrio Travel, (800) 372-6232. Interhostel If you're 50 or older, you can study the history of Ireland, the politics of Spain, the art of China or the story of the Czech Republic with Interhostel, an educational travel group that offers outstanding learning vacations in Europe, Mexico, Australia and China. …
