`Thanks For Calling Our Bank. That'll Be 50 CENTS, Please'

Some of the nation's largest banks - including NationsBank - are charging customers who call in for information about their accounts, even if they only "talk" to a computer.

The fees, which range from 50 cents a call to $2, are levied in most cases only after a customer exceeds a maximum number of free calls per month. Banks say the fees are necessary to stop too-frequent calling by some customers. A spot check of nation's 15 largest banks showed that five charge some customers to phone in. NationsBank, the nation's fourth-largest bank, charges 50 cents per call to the bank's computer and $2 to talk to a person, after eight free calls per month. Associated Press `Virtually All' Jobs Staying At Boatmen's Moving Unit "Virtually all" jobs will remain at Boatmen's Relocation Services after it is sold to Michigan National Corp., the companies said. Michigan National runs its own relocation service, and says it plans to operate Boatmen's Relocation as a full-service office in St. Louis. NationsBank bought Boatmen's in January, and put the relocation unit up for sale. Boatmen's Relocation employs about 120 people in downtown St. Louis and the company says "virtually all" will keep their jobs. Michigan National's relocation unit is called Executive Relocation Corp. Both units serve companies that move workers across the country. They handle home sales, tax reporting, mortgage and property management.
