Safety Starts off His Season on Wright Foot

Toby Wright didn't appreciate the bomb dropped on him before the Rams-Broncos game last week in Denver.

He was dressing, and fully intending to play, something he hadn't done since late July when the Rams scrimmaged the Indianapolis Colts in Champaign, Ill. But before he could leave the locker room at Mile High Stadium, the news came down that he wouldn't face the Broncos.

Last week haunted him before Sunday's game at the Trans World Dome. He wanted desperately to go up against the New York Giants but feared another bomb. This time, though, he was ready to fight for a chance to return to his position at strong safety. The news came Sunday morning at the Dome. "When I walked in here, I was waiting for Dick Vermeil or someone to tell me `no,' and I knew we were going to get into an argument, I knew it," Wright said. "But it didn't work that way." Wright, who has wrestled with hamstring woes this season and last, hasn't enjoyed his benchside view. He not only wanted to come back, but wanted to make sure everyone present knew of his return. The fans knew. When the Rams starters were introduced, the announcer couldn't finish squeezing out Wright's name before the fans erupted with a hearty welcome. "I heard it," Wright said. "I fed off them. I mean, I was already ready to get this done and I'm just glad that the fans are behind me because it's been a hard road for me as far as injuries." Wright played tag-team safety with Gerald McBurrows, the latter playing most often in obvious passing situations. That strategy allowed Wright to play, but not in situations that might have wreaked further havoc on his left hamstring. "They made sure that Gerald and I switched off because of the fact that I'm not 100 percent," Wright said. "Thank God I made it through this one without having another injury so I can get better for next week. …
