CLARENCE "THE BIG MAN" CLEMONS picked counseling over a court battle to settle charges that he battered his girlfriend.

As part of a pretrial diversion program, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN'S former saxophonist will also donate $1,000 to charity and write a letter of apology to Sharlene Smalley. He began counseling Monday and will have to check in with the program once a month for a year.

Smalley said she and Clemons were quarreling Dec. 6 while visiting a friend in Islamorada, Fla., in the upper Keys, when he allegedly pushed her to the ground and later threw her into a wall, kicked her and punched her. Clemons played for most of the 1970s and '80s with Springsteen's E Street Band. English folk singer BILLY BRAGG will record some of WOODY GUTHRIE'S unfinished songs for an album. Bragg planned to travel to Oklahoma this week to research some of the places mentioned in Guthrie's lyrics. He said the singer's daughter, Nora, asked him last year to complete "a very considerable number of songs" that Guthrie wrote but never set to music. Guthrie, like Bragg, did not read music, but Guthrie recorded an extensive collection of folk standards nonetheless. The lyrics are part of the collection at the Woody Guthrie Foundation in New York. "There's so much stuff in there, and it's all alphabetical. So when you get to `D,' there's a lot of songs about dust," said Bragg, in Pittsburgh for a performance Wednesday night. "Nobody wrote with greater empathy about dust than Woody." Comedy is coming to the University of Southern California thanks to $1 million from the estate of GEORGE BURNS. The money will fund the George Burns Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Performance at the School of Theatre, dean Robert Scales said Tuesday. "The professorship will enable the school to recruit for its faculty some of today's best performers, talented and successful individuals whose busy schedules prevent them from taking a permanent, full-time teaching post," Scales said.
