Conductor SEIJI OZAWA'S 25th season with the Boston Symphony Orchestra started with bad timing, shrill horns and a hurried exit - all before he made it to Symphony Hall.

Ozawa got to the opening-night stage a half-hour late Wednesday after getting stuck behind an accident on the Massachusetts Turnpike. The maestro pulled some strings to get out of the jam: A cellular phone call got him a state police escort.

"The lesson is, if you're in a traffic jam, have Seiji Ozawa with you," said orchestra chairman R. Willis Leith Jr. Political Harmony: Sen. TED KENNEDY tried to make up with Sen. ORRIN HATCH - and got a love song. Hatch wrote the song, "Souls Along the Way," for Kennedy and his wife, VICKI. After the senators quarreled last spring about the child health care bill, Kennedy stopped by Hatch's office the next day to patch things up. Hatch then told him about the song, and Kennedy asked to hear it. "I played it on a stereo cassette in my office" - it was performed by country singer MADELINE STONE - "and he got teary-eyed," Hatch said. "The song acknowledges they have joined souls along the way, that they have a beautiful thing going for them." Hatch gave the Massachusetts Democrat, a longtime friend, a copy. A few weeks later, Kennedy phoned Hatch at the Utah Republican's Salt Lake City office. Kennedy was calling from the sailboat where he and his wife were celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary. " `I just played it for Vicki, and she's crying. It's so beautiful,' " Hatch recalled Kennedy saying.
