Mother Teresa's admirers and followers gathered around her body as it lay in state Wednesday to celebrate her "inspiration day" - the time she said she heard a call from God, 51 years ago, to the path of sacrifice and service to the poor.

Close associates of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate went to Calcutta's St. Thomas Church to pray near her body, and missionary nuns elsewhere also marked the day.

Nuns at one of Mother Teresa's shelters in Bombay found an emaciated woman, her body covered with maggots, on their doorstep early Wednesday, and linked her appearance to the anniversary of the late nun's religious revelation. "It is unusual that this woman came to us on the day of inspiration," Sister Christie Paul said. "We feel it is Mother's way of saying there is so much more to be done." Calcutta's archbishop, Henry d'Souza, said Pope John Paul II has decided to send Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Vatican secretary of state, to head the papal delegation to the funeral on Saturday. …
