John Elway's biceps tendon was indeed torn - ruptured in an Aug. 4 preseason game against Miami. Doctors said the best he could hope for was to regain 90-percent strength in that wondrous right arm of his. "I was scared," Elway said. "I was thinking, `Maybe I'm done.' " Far from it. In some freak of medicine, the injury somehow relieved pressure on Elway's throwing shoulder, which underwent arthroscopic surgery in March. Then again, Elway has always been a freak of nature. This is a guy who has had no anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee since high school in Los Angeles. The biceps injury sidelined Elway for only two preseason games. At 37, he's throwing better than ever. As for that chronic tendinitis in his right arm? "There's no tendon, so there can't be any `itis,' " Elway quipped after completing 18 of 26 passes, including two TDs last week against Seattle. "It's just turned out great; I wish it had snapped three years ago." Despite the injury scare, and his limited preseason work, Elway is off to one of his best starts ever. After two games, he's the second-rated quarterback in the league behind New England's Drew Bledsoe. For only the third time in his illustrious 15-year career, Elway hasn't thrown an interception in his first two games. Sunday at Mile High Stadium, Elway plays his first - and perhaps last - game against a St. Louis professional football franchise. The Broncos didn't play the St. Louis Cardinals between 1983 and 1987 - Elway's first five seasons in the league. This is their first meeting with the Rams since Georgia Frontiere moved her franchise to St. Louis in 1995. The Rams aren't scheduled to play the AFC West again until the year 2000, so this could be it. …
